Is It Too Late to Get Started With SEO?

Amber Blevins • Jun 17, 2022

Believe it or not, search engine optimization—otherwise known as SEO—has been around for at least 25-years.

SEO first became a thing around 1997, when it became apparent that business owners and marketers were using certain strategies with the express purpose of ranking their sites higher on search engines and exposing their brands to more consumers.

Since its humble beginnings, SEO has grown and evolved. These days, it’s a major component in any successful online marketing venture. In fact, unless you’re investing heavily in paid advertising, your business website likely won’t be seen by your target audience (or anyone else) without some level of SEO.

So what if you don’t have any SEO strategies in place at this point? With the complexities of search engine optimization and the steep learning curve, is it worth it to even try? Absolutely.

It's never too late to get started with SEO. Whether you've been in business for 50 years of 5 months, it's not too late to implement SEO in your marketing strategy. SEO is incredibly cost effective and, although there’s a lot to learn, it’s friendly to beginners. The results of your SEO efforts could radically boost the traffic to your website and truly transform your business.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re starting out with SEO.

Take Baby Steps

Once you’ve made the decision to implement an SEO strategy, it’s tempting to jump in with both feet. But before you do that, understand that it’s a slow climb to the top. There are many components of SEO and you’ll have the best chance of success if you start with a solid foundation.

Begin with the basics and work your way up from there.

Educate yourself on how keywords work and the best keywords to use for the audience you’re targeting. Then, update your website’s content with those keywords in mind.

Learn about content marketing and how blog posts and social media can play a part in SEO.

Check on your Google Business Profile and be sure it’s fully optimized. (This one is very important!)

Check Out Your Competition

You’ve likely already studied your competition in an effort to make your own business better. But now’s the time to examine their online presence, specifically.

How are your competitors handling SEO? Do a few simple Google searches using relevant keywords. Are your competitors ranking in the search results? Check their website, blogs, and social media feeds. Is it clear the content is written with SEO in mind?

Determine if your competitors are using certain SEO techniques that would also work for your business. Likewise, identify where your competitors are falling short when it comes to SEO and then double-down on those strategies to your company’s advantage.

Identify a Narrow Niche (and Attack It)

If you’re a local business, you and your competitors are battling to attract customers from the same finite group of consumers. And the competition to rank in local search results can be fierce.

Instead of facing your competition head-on, consider taking a different approach. Identify a select audience segment or a narrow niche within your company’s suite of services. This allows you to give laser focus to a very select group of people and/or a particular service, rather than the larger crowd that your competitors are going after.

Understand Overnight Success Just Doesn’t Happen

The ultimate goal of SEO is to see your site ranked number one in Google search results. But it’s possible you’ll never reach the number one spot. Perhaps a more realistic goal is to see your site ranked in the top five or the top 10 results. In any case, you won’t see a radical shift in your site’s ranking overnight.

Even the most highly-paid and sought-after SEO experts can’t change your ranking from #500 to #1 in a day. That’s just not how SEO works.

Understand that SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Your persistence will be rewarded, but in a methodical climb through the search engine rankings, not an overnight boost to the top.
