3 Easy On-Page SEO Tips to Boost Your Local Visibility

Amber Blevins • Feb 04, 2022

SEO—search engine optimization—brings to mind many things.  Links, metadata, your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) all play a part in helping your website climb the search engine ranks.

But your website itself also plays a major role in your ranking.  On-page optimizations can significantly affect where your site appears in local organic search results and map results.  And the best part, many on-page optimization tactics are easy to achieve.

Here are three quick things you can do to boost your on-page SEO.

Refresh Your Content

The content on your website really matters when it comes to Google’s search engine algorithms.  It’s one of the ways Google determines where your site should appear in search results.  If your website copy is largely non-existent or if it's generic, poorly written, or artificially stuffed full of keywords, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

Your on-page content should not only be helpful and engaging, it should also reference your area of service.  This shows Google and potential customers that’s you’re a local expert in your field.

As a local business, your goal is to connect with local customers.  That means you absolutely should reference your city or town, mention local landmarks or attractions, and build a common bond with the person viewing your website.  This not only gives your site viewer a sense of trust, it reinforces your local authority with Google.

Make Use of Internal Linking

You’re probably aware that external links to your website are beneficial for SEO.  But did you realize internal links are important, too?  When a page on your website has a link to another page on your site, it not only helps users navigate to relevant information, it also helps Google’s bots crawl around your site and take in more information.  This increases your authority in Google’s eyes and has a positive effect on your ranking.

Add internal links where they make sense and where they’ll be most helpful to the site visitor.  Arbitrary linking or overdoing it with the link won’t help your cause.

Double-Check Your NAP

NAP—or name, address, and phone number—is mentioned frequently on our blog.  That’s because it’s so important.  If you want to rank in Google’s local search results, your business’s name, address, and phone number must be consistent throughout the internet and especially on your own site.

This means ensuring your business name is always the same, wherever it’s mentioned.  If your business is Smith’s Plumbing LLC, then your business should always be referred to as Smith’s Plumbing LLC.  Not Smith’s or Smiths Plumbing or Smith’s Plumbing Company.  Likewise, your address and phone number should always appear the same.

Inconsistent NAP listings can make it hard for Google to recognize you as a single business, which can wreak havoc on your rankings.  It can also make it difficult for potential customers to find you.

Check your website’s Contact Us page, your site’s footer, and any schemas or other HTML tags you have in place.  Be sure your NAP is consistent and, if it’s not, fix it right away.

The tips mentioned here are relatively easy to implement but can have a major impact on your site’s ranking.  Don’t put off taking these simple steps to get your website in front of more potential customers.
