Now Is the Time to Boost Your SEO

Amber Blevins • Apr 08, 2020

So, foot traffic has slowed to a stop at your local business. Or maybe you’ve closed shop for the time being due to government mandates. In either case, you may be wondering, “Should I keep marketing my business?” or more specifically, “Should I keep up with SEO right now? Does it matter?”

The answer to all of those questions is YES. By all means, continue marketing your business. There will be a time when things in the business world – and the world around us – will get back to normal. And when that time comes, you need a queue of customers lined up when you reopen your doors. One way to make sure that happens is with effective marketing right now.

Focusing more time on your SEO is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to do this.

Why Is SEO so Important Right Now?

It may seem counterintuitive to work harder on attracting customers when your local business may be closed or working under various restrictions. But in reality, the hard work you put toward your SEO now will pay off in the long run, particularly when your business has reopened. (And especially if your competitors aren’t focused on SEO at the moment.)

The obvious result of increased SEO is a higher search engine ranking. But the positive byproduct is trust and human connection you build with your clients and potential customers. Remember, SEO is not just a few well-placed keywords. It’s also about providing genuine, helpful content for those who are searching for information online.

What Should I Do to Bolster My SEO?

There are two simple techniques you should be applying on a n increased bas is. And no, these are not brand-new concepts. In fact, you should already be doing them. But now is the moment to take it to the next level. The only investment is your time and a bit of effort.

Check Your Listings

Wherever your business is listed, whether it’s Google My Business, a professional directory, Yelp, Facebook, or anywhere else. Check the listings. Do they reflect your current business hours and any accommodations you’re providing for customers? Is your business name, address, and contact information co nsistent across all the listings? What about your branding?

Keep in mind that consistent and current information about your business not only helps you climb search engine rankings; it also reinforces trust with consumers.

It’s very important your information is correct and uniform throughout the internet. That means on every single listing. If something’s not right, fix it. If your branding doesn't quite match up across the various platforms, update it.

For Google My Business, specifically, i t’s critical you’ve made updates to your business hours or changes in the way you’re d ealing with customers . Learn more about that here .

One word of caution before you take on the task of updating your listings – If you work with a marketing firm, be sure to check in with them first. At Locallogy , ensuring our clients’ listings are current and correct is something we handle on an on-going basis, so it’s not something they need to deal with on their own. Your marketing team may be taking care of this for you, as well.

Publish Relevant Content

Let’s face it. The average consumer is a little uneasy right now. They’re probably not leaving the house much, if at all. They’re inundated with scary news all day and they’re not sure who to trust. This is where you come in, with helpful, relevant content that builds the groundwork for a trustworthy customer relationship.

Unless you’re a medical professional, you probably don’t have a lot of information to share about the current health crisis. But you can tell your customers how you’ve adjusted your business practices to make things safer. Or how you’re working within your community to help those in need.

From short social media posts to copy on your website, share information that your customers will find helpful and interesting.

You can also take this opportunity to share some of your expertise in the form of blog posts. Compile a list of FAQs you receive from customers. Invite readers to leave more questions in the comments. Document your processes and explain how doing business with you works. Tell customers about your company’s values. The key is providing quality content that people want to read.

You may be surprised how many people are stuck at home looking for interesting information. Bonus points if the information is coming from a local business they can identify. Share an article about how you learned to do construction while on a mission trip or how your hair salon started in your grandma’s garage. Tie in your local business with an interesting story to read and you’ve made a connection. And with this connection you have a potential customer.

This Is Not the Time to Give Up on SEO

Remember, SEO is not the type of investment that gets turned off and on. I t k e eps working for you . Now is the time to work hard on SEO to build the client base you’ll need when your doors reopen and it’s back to business as usual.
