How to Rank in Google’s Local Pack Results

Amber Blevins • Oct 23, 2020

Last week we posted about local pack search results and localized organic results. We discussed how these search results appear differently on Google's front page and the distinct features of each. If you missed it, read the post here

This week we'll shift to focus specifically on Google’s local pack search results.

Quick Review

Local pack results (also known as “3 pack”) are those search results that appear toward the top of Google's search results page. These results are placed above organic results.

Results in the 3 pack contain more details than the standard organic results, like contact info and star ratings. The results also appear on a helpful local map.

Ranking in the 3 Pack

First things first:  It’s not possible to optimize to specifically rank in the local pack results. That’s because these results are specific to the location search terms used or the searcher’s actual geographic location (in “near me” searches.)

However, you can take steps to increase your chances of appearing in the 3 pack results when the right search terms are used for your business and location.

Check Your NAP

Your business's name, address, and phone number (your “NAP”) should be consistent everywhere throughout the internet. When it’s not, Google has a hard time recognizing your business, which can drastically affect your rankings.

Ensure your NAP is the same wherever it appears – not just on your website and social media pages, but also on any trade sites you’re part of and any local directories in which your company is listed. Your business’s NAP should appear exactly the same everywhere it’s listed online.

Optimize Your Google My Business Listing

It goes without saying, if you want to rank in any kind of local search, you need to optimize your Google My Business listing. This includes keeping your contact details and business hours up-to-date, adding great photos to your listing, and getting reviews.

Remember, Google My Business is a vital tool for any local business.

Links on Other Local Sites

When you’re working toward ranking in local searches, linking your site on other local websites is always beneficial. This could include local charities your company is part of, a local sports team you may sponsor, or even your local chamber of commerce.

When your site is linked on other local websites, it reinforces your credibility with Google and helps boost your search ranking.

Get Reviews

Though it’s last on our list, this is possibly the most important part of ranking in the local 3 pack. Curating reviews helps increase your visibility and boost your Google ranking.

Until about a year ago, reviews and ratings were only a portion of the algorithm Google used in their ranking system. But within the past year, a major emphasis has been placed on customer reviews when it comes to Google search ranking.

Reviews and star ratings on your Google My Business listing are, of course, considered when it comes to ranking in Google searches. But GMB reviews aren’t the only ones that matter. Google also takes into account other review platforms like Yelp and Facebook, so don't narrow your focus too much when it comes to soliciting reviews.

Great reviews on a variety of review sites can do a lot to push you up through the rankings, so it’s important to put an emphasis on providing excellent services that results in glowing reviews from your customers.

Ranking in Local Pack Results

Remember, local pack results are just that – local results. If you’re aiming to rank higher and get included in that coveted 3 pack on Google’s front page, follow the steps we’ve outlined here.  Focus on optimizing for your geographic location and get your name out there as a trusted local business.
