What Can I Do that My Competitors Aren't Doing?

“What can I do that my competitors aren’t doing?”

Local business owners have asked us this question many times, especially regarding their websites. And while we can’t give a one-size-fits-all answer, we can help you figure out what your competition is and isn’t doing, and how you can use that to your advantage.

What is Your Competition Doing?

Before you can determine what your competitors aren’t doing, you need to establish what they are doing. Browse their website, check out their Google My Business listing, and scroll through their social media accounts.  Do some research and answer questions like these:

  • What services do they offer?
  • How is their customer service?
  • What do their reviews say about their strengths and weaknesses?

Once you have a solid understanding of what your competition does, you can look for what they don’t do. From there, it will be easier to find what sets you apart and leverage those differences in your favor.

Explain Why You’re Different

In addition to providing details about your products and services, make sure your website tells consumers why you’re different from your competitors. Anything from your quick service to the brands you carry can make you stand out among the competition. If you can find even one difference that sets you apart, use it to show consumers you’re the better option.

Provide Top-Notch Service

Nothing sells your business better than quality customer service. It may sound like common sense that a company should aim for great service, but not all businesses make it a priority. When you and your competition sell products or services that are essentially the same, your reputation for an exceptional customer experience is what will set you apart.

Emphasize Positive Ratings and Reviews

We can’t say it enough—reviews and star ratings are so important for setting yourself apart. It’s what most consumers look at before making a final purchasing decision. Display positive reviews on your website, local listing, and social media platforms for a wide audience reach.

Ultimately, the best way to stand out is having star ratings appear next to your business name in search results. This will automatically draw attention to your business and away from your competitors.

Interact with Your Customers

This goes beyond the interaction you have with customers during a project or sale.  People notice when businesses make a genuine effort to ensure the customer is satisfied. That’s why you want to look for a variety of ways to interact with your customers, especially in areas your competition is overlooking.

  • Post on social media and personally respond to comments, questions, and especially complaints.
  • Respond to EVERY single review out there, no matter what it says. Thank each customer for their comments and offer to resolve any issues that negative comments mention.
  • Close out each project with a personalized phone call or email. Nothing pushy or salesy, just a simple follow-up to ensure they're satisfied and invite them to provide feedback.

List Your Achievements and Awards

If your business has won any awards or received notable recognition, put it on your website. Maybe you were included on a list of best local businesses or you have an outstanding BBB rating.  Share these accolades! This shows consumers you work hard and others have noticed. Don’t be afraid to brag about your business, including your achievements.

Support a Local Cause

Giving back to the community you are a part of makes a powerful impression on local consumers.  It solidifies your position among the community. Your potential customers will be more likely to support a business that goes above and beyond to positively impact their community. Look for a local charity or program that needs attention and start working with them.

Offer Deals and Discounts

It’s marketing 101: offer a discount to capture your customers' attention. There’s a good chance your competitors are already doing this, but you have the opportunity to create a better deal that will attract more customers.

Embrace the Competition

It’s difficult to say what your competitors’ marketing strategies are and what exactly you can do differently.  But remember, you don't need to reinvent the wheel.  Use common sense, implement these strategies, and provide the highest level of service to your customers.  You may soon find that other local businesses are striving to reach your level of success.
