6 Questions Your Digital Marketing Agency Will Ask

Engaging a digital marketing agency may seem like a daunting task, especially if you don’t know a lot about marketing to begin with. But don’t let that stop you from taking the next step in growing your business.

Every marketing agency is different, and each will have its own unique set of questions for new clients. But there are some general questions you should be prepared for, no matter which firm you choose. Here are six questions your digital marketing partners will probably ask.

1. How Much Do You Know About Digital Marketing?

Don’t be afraid to be honest – This question is not intended to make you feel dumb. Your marketing partners truly need to understand how familiar you are with digital marketing, its concepts, and how it works short- and long-term.

If you’re already knowledgeable about digital marketing, great. If you only know a little, that’s fine. If you’re completely in the dark, that’s okay, too. After all, there’s a reason you’re reaching out to professionals for help.

A reputable marketing firm will work with you on your level and will present a plan using language you can understand.

2. What’s Your Current Marketing Plan?

It helps your marketing partners to know if you’re starting from scratch or if you already have some marketing efforts in place. If you do, it’s sometimes beneficial to build on your current marketing strategy. In other cases, it might be best to start over.

Be prepared to answer some follow-up questions, too. If you previously worked with a digital marketer, you’ll likely be asked what worked well with them and what didn’t , as well what you’re looking to do differently now.

3. What’s Your Budget?

Naturally, your budget will play a big part in the marketing plan your agency puts together for you. It’s important you’re transparent about this from the beginning. Your marketing partners need an understanding of your budget not only to recommend appropriate services but also to give you clear expectations.

If you don’t have a set budget or you’re not sure how to budget for marketing services, don’t worry. Any trustworthy marketing firm will explain the general costs associated with marketing and their fees in particular. (Beware of any marketing agency who is not upfront about their fees.)

4. Who Are Your Customers?

Knowing your target customer is an important part of running any business. In fact, you probably identified your audience back when your business was still just an idea. But your target customer is especially important when it comes to marketing. Your marketing firm needs to learn all they can about your intended customers and their demographics. You may be asked questions about your customers’ gender, age range, occupation, or geographic location.

When your marketing partners have a clear picture of your ideal customer, they can begin mapping the customer’s journey and build out the most appropriate marketing plan.

5. How Are Your Current Customers Finding You?

Along with identifying your target customers, your marketing partners also need to understand how your current customers are finding you. If you don’t have specific or documented numbers on this, that’s okay. But you should be able to explain how at least some of your customer found you. There could be any number of ways, like your website, word-of-mouth or other referrals, or a Google listing.

Learning how your current customers find you is another step your marketing partners will take to build out a plan for your business.

6. What Are Your Ultimate Goals?

Last but certainly not least, your marketing partners will want to learn about your goals. And you won’t get off easy with, “We want more customers.”

Your marketing firm will ask you about both your short- and long-term goals and they’ll be looking for as much detail as possible. Your answer might be, “We want to sell more of this new product we just launched,” or “We need more customers to visit our new showroom in the neighboring town,” or “We want to increase our customer base by 25% over the next 6-months.”

Your goals could be the single most important thing you discuss with any marketing team. Without understanding your goals, marketers won’t be able to develop a strategy for your business. And without a strategy in place, your marketing efforts may not be successful.

Come Prepared but Don’t Worry About Saying, “I Don’t Know”

Not every digital marketing firm will ask you these exact questions. Some firms will ask you these questions plus many more. In any case, it’s important you’re as upfront as possible and very clear when it comes to the information you provide.

If you don’t have a file full of figures and projections, that’s okay. If your answer to some of the questions is, “I don’t know,” that’s okay, too. Transparency is the key.

The more your marketing team understands your business and your goals, the better the chances are of a successful marketing campaign.
